Advanced Driving Technology Designed Around the Driver

For some drivers, traditional hand controls may not provide the level of assistance needed to operate a vehicle safely and independently. AEVIT™ high-tech driving controls from Electronic Mobility Controls (EMC) provide another option.

AEVIT allows steering, acceleration, braking, and other vehicle functions to be operated through specialized electronic controls. Depending on the driver’s needs, those controls can include a joystick, reduced-effort steering, electronic gas and brake controls, touchscreens, switches, and other adaptive interfaces.

R & R Mobility is a certified EMC installer, with specialized training to install, program, configure, and service AEVIT systems. Each installation is based on the driver’s professional evaluation, recommended equipment, and compatible vehicle.

Learn About AEVIT™ High-Tech Driving Controls

What Is AEVIT?

AEVIT is an advanced electronic driving control system that gives drivers who cannot use conventional steering and pedals alternative ways to operate a vehicle.

The system can be configured around the driver’s strength, range of motion, and abilities, using controls such as a joystick, reduced-effort steering, or electronic gas and brake controls. AEVIT can also make functions such as turn signals, headlights, the horn, and windshield wipers easier to access.

The vehicle’s standard steering wheel and pedals can remain available, allowing another driver to operate the vehicle normally when needed.

Primary Driving Controls

AEVIT can provide alternative ways to control steering, acceleration, and braking, including:

  • Joystick controls that can combine steering, acceleration, and braking
  • Electronic gas and brake controls for drivers who cannot operate conventional pedals
  • Reduced-effort steering that requires less strength and movement than traditional steering
  • Customized control configurations based on the driver’s individual abilities

The appropriate controls are determined through a professional driver evaluation before the vehicle is equipped.

Secondary Driving Controls

AEVIT can also make everyday vehicle functions easier to operate, including turn signals, headlights, windshield wipers, and the horn.

Depending on the driver’s needs, these functions can be accessed through a touchscreen, switches, buttons, or other adaptive controls positioned for safe and comfortable use.

Customized Control Options

No two drivers have exactly the same mobility needs. AEVIT can be configured with specialized controls based on factors such as the driver’s strength, movement, grip, and range of motion.

For drivers who require additional support or positioning, specialized orthotic controls may also be incorporated into the system. The specific equipment and configuration are based on the driver’s professional evaluation and recommendations.

The AEVIT Process at R & R Mobility

High-tech driving controls require more than selecting equipment from a catalog. The process begins with understanding the individual driver’s abilities and determining which controls are appropriate.

If you have not yet completed a professional driving evaluation, R & R Mobility can refer you to a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS). The specialist evaluates your driving abilities and recommends the adaptive equipment and controls appropriate for your needs.

R & R Mobility then works from those recommendations to configure, install, program, and service the AEVIT equipment in a compatible vehicle.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

AEVIT is designed for drivers who require more advanced adaptive controls than conventional steering, pedals, or standard hand controls can provide.

Depending on the driver’s abilities, AEVIT can provide alternative ways to control steering, acceleration, braking, and other important vehicle functions.

Yes. A professional driver evaluation helps determine which high-tech driving controls and configuration are appropriate for your individual abilities and needs.

If you do not already have a specialist, R & R Mobility can refer you to a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) for an evaluation.

A joystick can allow several primary driving functions to be controlled through relatively small hand movements. Depending on the configuration, this can include steering, acceleration, and braking.

Reduced-effort steering retains a more traditional steering motion but reduces the amount of strength required to turn the wheel.

Your professional driving evaluation helps determine which type of control is appropriate for you.

Yes. An AEVIT-equipped vehicle can retain its conventional factory steering wheel and pedals, allowing another driver to operate the vehicle using the standard controls when needed.

R & R Mobility will explain how the adaptive and conventional controls operate with your specific installation.

Not every vehicle is compatible with every AEVIT configuration. The vehicle’s make, model, year, available space, and the adaptive equipment being installed can all affect compatibility.

Some AEVIT components may be transferable to another compatible vehicle, while other components, installation hardware, or programming may need to be replaced or reconfigured.

R & R Mobility can evaluate your existing equipment and the new vehicle to determine what can be reused.

Funding may be available depending on your circumstances through insurance, vocational rehabilitation programs, or other assistance programs.

Eligible veterans may also qualify for certain VA automobile adaptive equipment benefits. R & R Mobility can provide information about the equipment and documentation involved as you explore available funding options.

High-tech driving controls should only be inspected and serviced by technicians trained to work with the equipment.

As a certified EMC installer, R & R Mobility can provide service and support for AEVIT systems and help address equipment concerns as they arise.
